UGC-Entitled Online Programmes

Online Degrees That Employers and Universities Accept

An online degree from a UGC-entitled university carries the same recognition as its on-campus equivalent. The difficulty is telling those programmes apart from the rest — here is how, and which universities are worth your fees.

What “Recognised” Actually Means

A university may offer a degree online only if the University Grants Commission has entitled it to do so for that specific programme. The UGC publishes the list of entitled universities and the programmes each is cleared for, and a degree earned in open, distance or online mode from that list is treated as equivalent to the same degree earned on campus.

That equivalence is what makes an online degree useful: it counts for government jobs, for promotions that require a graduate or postgraduate qualification, and for admission to further study in India and abroad.

Two limits matter. First, entitlement is programme-specific — a university cleared for an online MBA is not automatically cleared for an online BCA. Second, professional programmes that need labs, clinics or practical training, such as engineering, medicine, nursing, pharmacy and architecture, are not permitted in online mode at all. Any site offering an online B.Tech or B.Sc Nursing degree is selling you a problem.

Check These Five Things Before You Pay

  • The university appears on the UGC's list of entitled institutions — for your exact programme, not just for online education in general
  • You have a DEB ID, which the UGC's Distance Education Bureau requires before enrolment; the university should guide you through it
  • The degree certificate will not be marked differently from the on-campus one
  • The fee schedule is in writing, including examination and convocation charges
  • Classes, recordings, assignments and examinations are described clearly — proctored online exams or a test centre near you

Who an Online Degree Suits

  • Working professionals

A postgraduate qualification without leaving your job, usually with evening or recorded classes.

  • Students with a gap year

A way to complete an unfinished degree or add one while handling family or health commitments.

  • Anyone blocked by a qualification bar

Promotions and government posts that require a graduate or postgraduate degree, where the subject matters less than the qualification.

  • Students far from a good campus

Access to a reputable university without relocating or paying hostel fees.

Universities With Online Programmes

A number of well-established universities now run online degrees under UGC entitlement, including IGNOU, Amity University Online, Manipal's online programmes, NMIMS, Jain University, Chandigarh University, Lovely Professional University and UPES, among others.

The entitled list changes as universities apply, renew or lose clearance, and so do their fees. Rather than publish a table that may be out of date by the time you read it, we check the UGC's current entitlement for the specific programme you are considering before you apply — and tell you plainly if it isn't there.

How Admission Works

  1. 1

    Decide the qualification you need

Start from the job, promotion or further study you are aiming at, not from the university's brochure.

  2. 2

    Check eligibility

Class 12 for a bachelor's degree, a bachelor's for a master's. Some programmes ask for work experience or a minimum aggregate.

  3. 3

    Verify entitlement

Confirm that the university is UGC-entitled for that exact programme, and get your DEB ID.

  4. 4

    Apply and submit documents

Fill the university's online form and upload your mark sheets, ID and photograph.

  5. 5

    Pay the fees

Pay the university directly, in instalments where offered, and keep every receipt.

  6. 6

    Start studying

You get LMS access, recorded and live classes, assignments and an examination schedule.

What Online Study Asks of You

Online degrees are flexible, not easy. Students who finish them tend to plan for these realities from the start.

  • Eight to twelve hours of study a week, self-scheduled
  • A reliable internet connection and a device that handles proctored examinations
  • Discipline with assignment deadlines — nobody chases you
  • Your own effort on networking, since there is no campus cohort around you
  • Internships and projects arranged by you, as placement support is limited compared with a regular programme
Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, where the university is UGC-entitled for that programme. A degree earned in online mode from an entitled university is treated as equivalent to the on-campus degree, which is what recruitment rules require. Always confirm entitlement for your specific programme before enrolling.
